Fuerteventura Diving
Diving in Fuerteventura is predominantly located on the north and southern tips of the island as well as up the quieter waters of the east coast. Dive sites are easily accessed from the coast and the island offers a multitude of sites catering to all dive abilities from beginners to the very experienced. In short, diving in Fuerteventura is great for the learner, the once-a -year diver, as well as enthusiasts.
Diving in Fuerteventura benefits from the fact that the island is volcanic, meaning that there are deep water drop offs around the island. These are channels where you're likely to see some of the ocean's bigger predators heading towards the reef in search of food. With visibility of around 50 metres in calm conditions, and water temperatures from 16 to 25 degrees, Fuerteventura diving is hard to beat.
In addition, Fuerteventura diving boasts many well-equipped dive centres and schools in the main centres of Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Jandia offering dive training courses such as PADI certification in a variety of languages. Key Fuerteventura diving sites are off Costa Caleta, the Castillo Reef off Caleta de Fuste and the Salinas Reef off Las Salinas further south. There's also a protected sea park zone at the Isla de los Lobos just off Corralejo where spotted rays, dolphins, pilot whales and hammerhead sharks are often sighted.
Some of the dive schools in fuenteventura are family friendly and due to there being so many rich dive sites close to shore there's no need to spend endless hours on dive boats heading out to remote locations. This is just one of the faactors making Fuerteventura diving suitable for families and those whose sea legs aren't too good.
With safety in mind, a group of fuenteventura diving schools have clubbed together and purchased a recompression chamber, offering maximum security and peace of mind to Fuerteventura diving guests. Ensure that the dive school you choose has access to this in an emergency. Other benefits of diving in Fuerteventura include a choice of dive schools with instruction in English, modern dive equipment and a lack of any overcrowding.
So what will you see underwater? Lava sculpted backdrops, fantastic eerie shapes, caves, grottos and sandy stretches that home a healthy fish population. Parrot fish, squid, and octopus are amongst the many species that can be seen in the clear waters along with schooling damselfish and barracuda. The rich lava walls are often encrusted with corals and anemones are a perfect habitat for large moray eels and groupers. Rays and angelsharks are also commonly sighted whilst diving in Fuerteventura along with torpedoray and stingray. The deep water drop offs also bring in different types of jacks, bluefish, huge tuna and even whalesharks.
Experienced divers to Fuerteventura can head to the rugged west coast with its large underwater caves and overhangs of volcanic rock. These areas offer some of the most visually exciting diving in Fuerteventura, but strong currents and high seas in the west can mean that it's an area that's off limits to anyone who isn't a seriously experienced scuba diver. Conditions may also prove more frustrating for divers on the west coast due to strong currents translating into underwater surges and reduced visibility.
If you're travelling with children who are too young to dive, many beaches on the east coast and some of the sheltered rocky coves of the north coast offer great snorkelling. With water temperatures rising to around 25 degrees in the protected, shallow pools, it's a really comfortable environment to float about and observe the brightly coloured fish. Many say that snorkelling on Fuerteventura compares favourably with Caribbean destinations. Moray eels, grouper, squid, octopus, brightly coloured star fish and parrot fish are all extremely commonly sighted by snorkellers, so if diving in Fuerteventura isn't on your agenda, don't forget to take some time out for a spot of snorkelling.
